Peter was a wealthy entrepreneur who gave up his true love and happiness for success and material pleasures. But after meeting a homeless orphan in one of his homes, everything changed.
Peter was a wealthy 62-year-old entrepreneur who spent most of his life building his fortune. For the longest time he only concentrated on his business and had no family of his own.
Peter was always brilliant as a kid. By the time he was 18, he had already opened his first company and dropped out of his freshman year to focus on his business full-time.
One day Peter went to check on one of his old abandoned properties. He had several properties around town, but this one was very special as he inherited it from his grandmother.
When he inherited the house he was already rich and never felt the need to visit it, let alone live in it. However, he planned to sell the house, so he had to assess what repairs were needed before it went on the market.
The truth was he was still a bit reluctant to sell it so figured he’d spend a little time there to help him decide. Peter and his grandmother were close, so he also wanted some time to reflect on his precious moments there.
“Who is it?” asked the voice.
As he entered the house, he realized that it was much worse than when he left. The ceilings were heavily infested with mold and you could smell the damp as soon as you walked in the front door. It was a disaster.
As he walked around the house, he recalled the various Christmases and family celebrations he had spent there with his family.
Unlike Peter, his grandmother always cared about family and that was one of the main reasons her family had managed to survive all their hardships over the years. She had a way of uniting people and bringing light to dark circumstances.
As he entered her old bedroom, he noticed something that surprised him. He found an old, tattered wedding dress on her bed. Examining it thoroughly, he suddenly heard a soft voice from the next room:
“Who is it?” asked the voice.
Peter stepped into the hallway and saw Angie, a pregnant young woman, staring at him in fear while holding a baseball bat, ready to strike. The young woman seemed homeless; her clothes were old, dirty and worn.
“This is my house. How did you get here?” asked Peter.
“Oh! I’m sorry,” said the young girl, dropping the bat and feeling embarrassed. Then she suddenly fell to the ground, crying.
“I’m so sorry. I – I just needed a place to sleep. I thought this house was deserted,” Angie said.
“It’s okay. I don’t live here. That was my grandmother’s house. Is that your wedding dress in the room?” asked Peter and helped her up.
“Yes. It was my mother’s,” Angie explained.
“All right. I think there should be some more coffee here. How about we share a cup? Then you can explain to me why you wanted to hit me with a baseball bat in my own house,” Peter said with a comforting one chuckle.
“Okay,” Angie replied, joining Peter in a short, gentle laugh at the irony of their situation.
Peter and Angie sat in the kitchen drinking coffee while she explained the recent events in her life. Angie was an orphan. The dress was the only thing that went with her name, and she was supposed to wear it to her wedding a month ago.
However, her rich fiancé left her when he found out she was pregnant, leaving Angie with nothing. He had cheated on Angie with another woman and canceled her wedding at the last minute to be with her. He threw Angie out of her house and moved in with the woman.
“As tough as things have been for me lately, I still believe there will be light in the darkness.”
When Angie told Peter all this, Peter started to cry. “I’m sorry. Did I say something wrong?” asked a confused Angie.
“No… No, it’s just that you remind me so much of my ex-fiancée. I was a jerk too, like your ex-boyfriend. I left the love of my life when I started making big bucks I don’t know…I think I felt like life had just begun, you know? That I was going to lose my freedom,” Peter said, mortified.
“Did you know that she was the love of your life back then?” Angie asked, taking his hand comfortingly.
“Nope. By the time I realized it, it was too late. I never found any real happiness after that. My relationships after her never really worked and I haven’t seen her since.”
“It breaks my heart to this day,” admitted a dejected Peter.
“Don’t worry. I know I’m probably not the right person to give you this advice, but you can still find happiness. As tough as it’s been for me lately, I still believe that light will appear in the darkness,” said Angie, hugging Peter.
That night, Peter invited Angie to stay in one of his lofts in town. Peter decided against selling the house and decided to renovate it. After a few months the place looked brand new.
Peter helped Angie get back on her feet and got her a job at one of his companies. Angie loved her job and even liked one of Peter’s employees.
Peter was completing renovations to his home around the same time Angie gave birth to a beautiful baby boy, whom she named Peter. He considered it a gift from God as he had always intended to give her the house once the renovations were complete.
Angie was overjoyed when Peter showed her the new house. Peter was just happy to have found happiness in his life through Angie and little Peter.
Years later, Angie married a loving man who turned out to be Peter’s employee, and Peter had the honor of walking her down the aisle.
