Dylan’s parents couldn’t help but worry about him after discovering he was sneaking into an abandoned house every day after school. They decided to ask him why, and his sanity amazed them.
Dylan was thrilled to learn that a couple had adopted him from the group home he lived in when he was 10 years old. He’d always heard stories about how the older a child got, the less chance they had of finding a home.
The little boy had always longed for a family, and now that it was happening and he was on his way to his new home, the only thing that bothered him was the thought of leaving his best friend Adam.
“I’ll miss you Adam,” he said as they hugged one last time, “I’ll never forget, trust me!”
With that final goodbye, Dylan smiled at his parents and took their hands in his. They happily walked to their car, ready to embark on a new lifelong journey together.
One day, Dylan’s mother, Abigail, was waiting for him to come home from school. She had his afternoon snack ready, but he wasn’t home until two hours later.
“Where have you been honey? Why did you come home late? I was worried about you,” she asked.
“Sorry mom. I went with my teacher to study a new math topic that I’m having trouble with,” he lied.
The next day the same thing happened again. He was two hours late coming home, and that caused Abigail’s concern. “I don’t think he learned from his teacher,” she told her husband Dave.
“Why do you say that? Maybe he’s having trouble with his classes,” he replied.
Abigail followed closely behind Dylan and saw him enter an abandoned house, causing her to panic. “What’s he doing in there?!”
Abigail shook her head. “No, I really don’t think so. He’s a smart kid. I’ve been checking his school uniform for the last two days and it’s dusty… not from playing, but from sitting on muddy ground. I think he’s going somewhere after school . We must follow him tomorrow.”
When he heard his son was going home in dirty clothes, Dave agreed that they should see where Dylan went after school. So the next day they waited across the street from the school entrance and saw him walking in the opposite direction of their house.
Abigail followed closely behind Dylan and saw him enter an abandoned house, causing her to panic. “What’s he doing in there?!” she asked her husband.
Abigail decided to enter the house to see if Dylan was in any trouble. As soon as she walked in, she saw Dylan take food out of his backpack and give it to a homeless man on the floor. He then pulled out some of his father’s old clothes that he had discarded in the garage and handed them to the man.
“I hope you like the food, sir,” Dylan said to the man, “They served this in our school cafeteria today. I’ll get you something else tomorrow.”
Abigail was stunned by what she saw. She called her husband into the house, and even he marveled at his son’s selfless qualities.
“Dylan, darling,” Dave said suddenly, making Dylan and the homeless man gasp in surprise. “Do you know this man?” he asked.
Dylan was suddenly nervous and his eyes filled with tears. “Yes Dad,” he admitted, “I’m sorry… I’m sorry I lied to you. I promised my best friend in the dorm that I would take care of his dad since I’m now the “Had a chance to visit him. I’m sorry. Please don’t send me back, I love you both very much,” he begged.
Abigail couldn’t help but feel sorry for Dylan, who was suddenly afraid they were going to dump him for lying. “Darling, we will never send you back to the group home. You are our son!” she assured him. “We love you, but of course we also want you to be honest with us. We are your parents and we need to know what’s going on with you.”
Dylan nodded. “I just thought you wouldn’t allow me to visit him. My best friend Adam can only count on me to take care of his father. He’s ill,” he revealed.
Abigail and Dave didn’t hesitate to help the man, who introduced himself as Greg. They took him to the hospital, where he was examined and treated.
After Greg recovered, Dave got him a job at his company, where he slowly earned money to build a decent home. Dave made sure to accompany Greg during his transition and promised that he would help Greg bring Adam back from the group home once Greg settled in.
A year passed and Dylan and his parents had just finished preparing their Christmas dinner. On the table they had turkey, steaks, vegetables and mashed potatoes and apple pie, which was Abigail’s specialty.
When they had the table set, they gathered around the table and sat next to Adam and Greg, who were finally reunited after years apart.
Before dinner they said their prayers and raised their glasses in a toast. “On Dylan,” Greg began, “may everyone be blessed to have a friend like him—loving, selfless, and fiercely loyal.”
“To Dylan!” everyone cheered.
What can we learn from this story?
Be honest with your parents and don’t lie to them; they only want the best for you. Being honest with your parents is a must and could have benefits. In Dylan’s case, he was able to help his best friend’s father recover with the help of his parents, which changed the man’s life forever.
True friendship expects nothing in return for all the kindness you give. Dylan promised Adam that he would take care of his father as soon as he got out of the group home, and he kept that promise. In the end, Dylan and his parents were even able to help Adam’s father recover from poverty, allowing them to be reunited.
